Can Dogs and Cats Share the Same Floor?

Many pet parents seem concerned, when it comes to adopt a cat with already having a dog or vice versa. They are worried whether a dog and a cat can go together without creating problems for each other. If you are one of them, then the insight thrown below may help resolve most of your anxieties.

When looking at these two animals – dogs and cats are often seen as natural enemies, but when it comes to be a family both can live happily in one house. Felines and canines when introduced properly, they will be good friends and there would be no need to keep them in separate places.

However, some dogs may have an uncontrollable prey drive towards cats, especially kittens. If your dog falls in the list, then you cannot have a cat in your house as it would be a risk to their lives.

Some breeds with high drive for preying are terriers, huskies and some ex-racer greyhounds and collies. Having such a dog in your house, you need to be extra careful when thinking to add a feline member to your family. Unless you know that your dog is cool with cats, it is highly dangerous to consider introducing a cat.

When it comes to cats, there are few of them in the colony that are afraid of dogs if they had any of the bad experiences with them. They will love to stay in dog-free house. Similarly, some dogs are uncomfortable staying with cats.

Introducing Your Cat to Your Dog

Keep your dog and cat in separate rooms before introducing them to each other. If the cat is new to the house, he/she will take some time to adjust. Normally, it takes a few days to establish but nervous cats may take little longer. During the starting stage, you can swop their bedding over so that they will come to know who else lives with them.

The Welcome Meet-Up

Before meeting a cat, take your dog for a walk, which will help him to be more relaxed during the meet-up. Keep your cat at a higher position, more preferably in a carrier. Putting a dog on a leash, walk him near the cat. If both seem calm, then you can take out the cat from the carrier. Get your family member or friend to help where one person can stay with the dog and another with the cat. This will make the first meeting smoothly.

After a few days, your dog and cat will become comfortable with each other sharing a warm relation making your family complete.
