The Quit Smoking Nicotine Patch

The nicotine patch hit the market in the late 1980’s and quickly became the product of choice for those attempting to stop smoking. Initially this nicotine replacement product was only available by prescription but today can be purchased in chemists and high street stores and have become the most popular of all smoking cessation products with millions around the world using the nicotine patch each day in their attempt to overcome their addiction to nicotine and smoking habit and get back to a tobacco-free-life.

The nicotine patch basically replaces the nicotine that you would have gotten from smoking a cigarette. These patches come in varying strength and are stuck on a part of the body, most often the upper torso and an individual using a nicotine patch will often start out with a patch that delivers a high dose of nicotine and then gradually work down to a patch that delivers a lower dose of nicotine over a period of weeks.

The patch does not guarantee that you will stop smoking and many people using the patch continue to smoke even when wearing the patch. This stop smoking aid can also cause some side effects. Some people who use the patch experience nausea, headaches and dizziness, others experience sleep problems, muscle aches or stiffness and finally the patch can result in skin irritation and for this reason it is recommended that the adhesive patch is place on a different part of the body each day, for example the left arm instead of the right or lower back.

On a positive note the quit smoking patch or any of the other nicotine replacement products such as the nicotine gum or inhaler can easily be combined with other smoking cessation methods to increase your chance of success when making a quit smoking attempt.

For instance some people use the patch in addition to acupuncture or the more expensive and high tech form of acupuncture known as laser therapy. Others visit a hypnotherapist a few times a week in order to help with the psychological side of addiction or purchase a quit smoking Cd which they can listen to in the comfort of their own home.

If you decide to use this product to stop smoking make sure you are committed to stopping smoking and don’t expect the patch to do all the hard work for you. The patch can and does help many smokers finally stop smoking and deal with the withdrawal symptoms that occur after stopping smoking but it will still require a level of willpower for this method to be effective.
