Vaginal Yeast Infections – Natural Homeopathic Treatment

Women who have reoccurring vaginal yeast infections know that the problem can be an ongoing battle. They not only suffer from the marked irritation of the infection but can become very frustrated when it returns on a continuing basis.

Candidiasis is a fungal infection. It can affect many parts of the body and be the primary cause of many different types of symptoms. The main symptoms of a Candida infection of the vagina are irritable white discharge, discomfort, redness, itchiness, burning and soreness. The Candida organism lives primarily in moist, warm conditions and there are reasons which account for its overgrowth. The fungus naturally occurs in the body. However, when there is an imbalance of bacteria, the yeast can proliferate. The natural acidity of the vagina prevents the yeast from growing. There are certain conditions which change this natural protection: the menstrual period, pregnancy, menopause, diabetes or a compromised immune system. Diets high in sugar, carbohydrates, refined food and foods that contain yeasts and molds can promote the overgrowth. Frequent use of antibiotics, immunosuppressive medications and contraceptives disrupt the microflora of the intestines and can lead to the overgrowth of Candida.

It is important that women who suffer from the symptoms make an appointment with their physician to determine whether or not the irritation is a yeast infection or a sexually transmitted infection. The vaginal discharge and soreness can also be symptoms of bacterial or mixed infections including vaginosis and trichomoniasis.

Once it has been determined that the woman has a yeast infection, there are conventional medical and natural holistic treatments available. Prescriptions include Nystatin, Diflucan and Nizoral. Natural treatments include: caprylic acid, oregano oil, garlic, olive leaf extract, and pau d’arco tea. A diet that reduces sugar, carbohydrates, yeast and mold containing foods and refined foods help to reduce the overgrowth. Probiotics replenish the “good bacteria” and are essential in any program that is decided upon.

There are four main Homeopathic remedies that are used in the treatment of vaginal yeast infections. Each is used for different circumstances.

Borax: is used when the discharge is transparent, there is a scalding feeling, irritation and anxiety and when the infection is worse after the period.

Calcarea Carbonica: itchy, milky discharge, worse before the period, headaches, anxiety, depression, worse for cold and damp weather.

Sepia: offensive yellow discharge, intolerable soreness and itching, burning, stinging, tearful, worse for stress and cold.

Candida Albicans: This is a nosode. It is a remedy which is taken from a Candida organism and prepared homeopathically. The homeopathic principal “like cures like” reflects how this remedy works.

In my Homeopathic practice, I have found that the Candida Albicans remedy is the most effective remedy for most of my clients who suffer from the fungal infection. This remedy along with probiotics can turn the aggravating health problem around quickly and stop the recurrence of the infection. The remedy can also be continued after the infection clears up for those who suffer from Candida symptoms elsewhere in the body. A qualified Homeopath can best decide on the remedy that is needed for the individual, its potency and its duration. The battle against Candida overgrowth can be won.
